Cycads On SeaCycads On SeaCycads are the most primitive living seed-bearing plants known to mankind, and belongs to an ancient order, the Cycadales, which flourished in the Carboniferous period 80 to 150 million years ago. This was the period when Dinosaurs roamed the wold. (Think of the film Jurasic Park). The Cycads we know today have changed little in their basic character and could be described "Living plant fossils".
The plant, "Encephalartos Longifola", which Botanist Francis Masson collected in the Eastern Cape in 1772, while traveling in South Africa with Thunberg, is still flourishing at Kew Gardens. This Cycads is nearly two hundred and forty years old. It is also known as the largest pot-plant in the world.
The Cycads family have persisted to the present day, but only as remnants of a great range of forms which 150 million years ago had an almost world-wide distribution.
